HISTORY - NOTTINGHAM FOREST TIMLINE

www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXsefMZieNs   - This probably still is my favourite Forest game ever. Granted, it was 'only' a semi-final but...

I always wanted to see us win the FACup & as you will all know we got to the final in 1991, only to lose 2-1 to Spurs AET.

So some 9 moths later (1/3/92), we played them again, this time in the league cup.... so revenge was in the air. The 1st leg at the CG had ened 1-1 so they started as favourites with home advanage & all.

We arrived in North London around midday by which time it had started raining. We got to the ground about 2.15pm only to find that due to an IRA bomb scare, we were not allowed into the stadium.

The game was also being screened live by ITV. Eventually, the game kicked off at 4.30pm, 1 1/2 hours late! Still raining, so we were already drenched.

In those days the 'away end' at White Hart Lane was behind the goal with seats in the top tier and terrace in the bottom. The roof did not fully cover the terraces so we continued to get soaked.

Forest took the lead after 10 mins through Lee Glover only for Gary Lineker to equalise 5 mins later. At 90 mins it was 1-1.  So, extra time... still raining!  Half way through the 2nd half the 6-7,000 travelling Forest fans (our full allocation) started chanting 'Brian Clough's red n white army', which just went on & on & on ... and then, 100 mins on the clock, Roy Keane heads the winner in front of the Forest fans in the mud... fantastic!'  It temporarily halted the 'BC red n white army ' but not for long.

Our legendary skipper said 'it was the best the fans have ever been' & that was not far from the truth.

We went on to lose the final to Man Utd 1-0 in a dour game at Wembley but at least I felt we had gone some way to gaining revenge for the loss in the FACup final. In my lifetime we still have not won the FA Cup; I was not born the last time it happened in 1959. That came 61 years after our only other FACup success in 1898. If we are to win it every 61 years, then I guess 2020 will be our year!  I've been lucky enough to see us lift the European Cup twice & not many fans of many clubs can say that: win the league cup 4 times & champions of England just the once in that oh so memorable 1977/78 season.  Throw in a few promotions (& relegations) and a few more minor trophies so I can't complain.

Maybe, one day we will win the FACup again, who knows but I have to say, I did not think back in 1992 that 21 years on we would not have returned to Wembley. It's not impossible, but a play off final this season is in the highly unlikely box.

I hope the link to You Tube works.  Just a bit of news footage... despite the game being screened live, I can't locate much of it.

* APOLOGIES IF I HAVE MISSED ANYTHING. I HAVE NOT INCLUDED THE LIKES OF THE LOCAL COUNTY CUP BUT I HAVE INCLUDED ALL THE MORE MINOR TROPHIES ( I THINK). THE MAIN ONES  OF COURSE ASIDE OF THE LEAGUE ARE THE EUROPEAN CUP, THE FACUP & THE LEAGUE CUP. THE LEAGUE CUP HAS OF COURSE BEEN KNOWN WITH DIFFERENT SPONSORS BUT I HAVE JUST CALLED IT THE LEAGUE CUP. THESE ARE THE ONES THAT MOST SOURCES WILL REFER TO WHEN LISTING A CLUB'S HONOURS.

I HAVE ALSO TRIED TO HIGHLIGHT AND MAKE CLEAR WHICH TIER WE WERE PLAYING IN FOLLOWING RENAMING OF VARIOUS DIVISIONS. I HOPE THIS IS CLEAR.

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE INCLUDED SOME OF OUR 3RD PLACE FINISHES IN THE TOP FLIGHT, SOME ACHIEVEMENT FOR A CLUB OUR SIZE ALONG WITH VARIOUS SEMI-FINALS NOTABLY IN THE FACUP & EUFA CUP BUT THERE ARE MANY SOURCES WHERE THAT INFORMATION CAN BE LOCATED SHOULD YOU WISH TO DO SO. SINCE THE FORMATION OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE OUR BEST FINISH WAS 3RD IN 1994/95.

WE WERE OF COURSE DENIED EUROPEAN FOOTBALL SEVERAL TIMES FOLLOWING THE BAN OF ENGLISH CLUBS PLAYING IN EUROPE AFTER LIVERPOOL FANS HAD RIOTED IN THE HEYSEL STADIUM IN 1985.

I WONDER WHAT OUR NEXT HONOUR WILL BE? PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE...BUT WHEN?

Our 2 crowning glories, back to back European Champions. Amazing, incredible & unimaginable. What helped of course was that we were extremely lucky to have the best English Manager of all time. And ,for me, my favourite player of all time, John Robertson, more than contributed in both finals. Stuart Pearce in later years ran him close for that favourite player tag but Robbo...a genius and an absolute legend!
