League Seasons - Randomly Reviewing League Campaigns & Matches

This is probably the most difficult section to do as there are so many league games that I have been to in over 45 years since it all began for me way back in the 1967/68 season.

Not quite sure the best way to tackle it therefore -  but I'll give it my best shot.

I am going to bracket together my first 5 seasons which ended in relegation at the end of 1971/72 & which coincided with me finishing my junior school.  Bac then, a lot of the kids 'supported' the big clubs but I was lucky enough to be introduced and taken to Forest at a very early age, along with some other kids and their Dad's off our estate in Balderton. We were best friends with the Lee family & it is probably fair to say that whilst others went to the games, our two families were the real diehards from very early on. All of us remian good friends to this day. My Dad would take myself and my brother Antony & his friend Tom Lee would take Steve & Andrew ...and at times his two daughters, Jeanette & Alison.

Andrew & I were the same age, Steve 3 years older and Antony 4 years younger than myself, and I know they took us to some away games early on but I cannot remember all of them.

It's difficult to rememebr totally vividly those early years & I know we went to most home games, but there was a gradual decline in Forest's fortunes throughout this period having had a magnificent season in 1966/67. The final league position is detailed below:

67/68  11th in Div 1

68/69  18th in Div 1

69/70  15th in Div 1

70/71  16th in Div 1

71/72  21st in Div 1 (relegated)

So then, my most memorable games from this period as best I can:

Although my 1st game was v Burnley (24/2/68), I would be lying if I said I could remember much about it. But, I do remember going to the last home game of the season, a night game v Everton which we won 1-0, although probably more for the pop & crisps at the pub on the wy home than the match!

The following season saw the Main Stand burn down against Leeds early in the season resulting in us playing our home games at Meadow Lane whilst it was rebuilt. I remember very vividly going to those games thinking even then Meadow lane was not as good as the CG. I also clearly remember our 1st match of the season, a 2-2 draw against Burnley on a boiling hot day in August and I'm pretty sure we blew a 2 goal lead but I have not checked this.

All season we were battling relegation & eventually saved ourselves with 2 games remaining. I can rememeber there being 6 consecutive home games between the 4th & 31st March, 4 of which were won and 2 lost. We did not win until the 6th match of the season in 69/70 but went on a run between 22nd Nov & 7th March where we lost just 1 in 14 and that ensured we were comfortably clear of relegation. Unfortunately we won just 1 of the last 8 and dropped to 15th.

I can remember losing 1-2 at home to Man Utd and they had the likes of Best, Law & Charlton playing & I specifically remember losing 1-3 at home to Derby, having earlier beaten them away. 70/71 saw a decent start based on what I had been used to, winning 2 and drawing 4 of the 1st 6, including a 4-1 hammering of Wolves at the CG. Whilst we languished in the bottom half of the table, there were never really any relegation worries.  My 1st Forest legend was Ian Storey Moore, who basically scored most of our goals, but we had signed Peter Cormack right at the end of the previous season from Hibs and he was another very good player. I particularly remember a MOTD game against Everton which we won 3-2, with 2 goals from Cormack & 1 from Ian Storey Moore.  In all honesty it was Storey-Moore's goals really that kept us up over those last  3 seasons.

And so to that fateful 1971/2 season where we would be relegated. I do rememebr an early season win over West Ham 1-0 at the CG, an Ian Storey-Moore penalty but there would only be 1 more win in the next 14 games. A 4-1 win against West Brom at the CG on 13th November where we looked really good but that would be followed by 3 more defeats. A brilliant Ian Storey Moore goal on 27th December v Arsenal in a 1-1 draw in front of 42,750 at the CG sugested there might still be hope, especially when followed up by a 2-2 at Maine Road on New Years Day which left us just 1 point away from safety.

However then came 7 consecutive defeats culminating in a 2-0 defeat against Ipswich in front of the lowest CG crowd of the season, just 9,872. Cries of "Gillies Out" echoed around a near empty stadium. The result left us 5 points adrift at the bottom of the league and 7 from safety plus we had played a game more. There would be at least some fight after that winning 4,drawing 2 and losing 4 of the last 10 to end the season in 21st and 4 points from safety. The sale of Ian Storey Moore to Man Utd after a 4-0 humiliation at the BBG was probably the final straw but at leas the board reused to sell him to Derby! I remember a couple of good wins against Coventry 4-0 & then Newcastle 1-0 as the fans sang "we'll support you evermore" & optimistically "we're moving up the league" but it was not to be. It would leave a very tearful 11 year old when relegation was confirmed in the penultimate match, a 1-3 defeat at home to Wolves in front of just 16,889.

I saw though some really good Forest players during these early years - Ian Storey-Moore, Joe Baker, Henry Newton, Peter Grummitt, Peter Hindley, Bob Mckinlay, Terry Hennessey, John Winfield, Barry Lyons, Sammy Chapman, Frank Wignall, Alan Hinton, John Barnwell, Paul Richardson, Jim Baxter, Ronnie Rees, Peter Cormack, Liam O'Kane to list a few, and one Duncan Mckenzie who's time was still to come.

I have attached a random selection of clips below from this period:

Not much to get excited about above then as we were about to begin life in the 2nd Division in the 1972/73 season:

72/73 - 14th in Division 2

73/74 - 7th in Division 2

74/75 - 16th in Division 2 (Brian Clough arrivedin Jan 75)

75/76 - 8th in Division 2

76/77 - 3rd in Division 2 (Promoted)

So then, my most memorable games from this 5 year stay in Division 2:

The 1972/73 season coincided with me starting my Comprehensive School (The Grove) & I was soon to discover that whilst there were quite a few Forest fans, there were still loads of the big club glory hunters.

There wasn't much to shout about from the season: a decent start winning 3 & drawing 2 of the 1st 5 to put us in 2nd place but it was all pretty much downhill from there. There was a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa late in Sept where we spent more time watching battling fans than the football and highlights of this game were on ATV' Star Soccer on the Sunday afternoon where commentator Hugh Johns also spent more time commentating on the fighting fans rather than the football! I have seen a 'You Tube' clip of it somewhere previously but I can't locate it now.

Whilst relegation was never really a threat, results were not good apart from a couple of games at the end of March. On the 24th, 4th place Sheffield Wednesday were dispatched 3-0 at the CG in front of 10,488 & the following week league leaders Burnley by the same score in front of 12,522, highlights of the latter being on BBC's MOTD programme that evening. We would finish a disappointing 14th and across the river Notts County gained promotion to Division 2. So, in 73/74 there would be a Nottingham 'derby' for the 1st time in a long while (outside of the local County Cup!)

1973/74 was my first really memorable season. I have already spent a fair bit of time talking about our wonderful FACup run, but I will concentrate purely on our league campaign here:

It all began well on a sunny day in August with a 4-0 win over Luton Town in font of 10,793 at the CG. However, the early season form was inconsistent and after 14 games we had won 4, drew 6 & lost 4 leaving us in 9th place in the table. A run then of just 1 defeat in the next 10 games & that was just 1-0 at Middlesbrough who were well clear at the top, lifted us to 5th, 2 points off automatic promotion. That run included a 1-0 win at Notts County on Boxing Day in front of 30,036, at least half of whom were Forest fans. It should be remembered that at that time Forest's average attendances were only slightly higher than Notts'.

We were brought crashing down to earth with a bump in the next game as we were hammered 1-4 at home to West Brom. A good point was earned in the next game in a 2-2 draw at Luton before table topping Middlesbrough visited the CG on the 2nd Feb. Fresh from that wonderful 4th Round FACup tie against Man City 6 days earlier, Forest simply took Middlesbrough apart in a wonderful 5-1 win. That result left them 5 points clear at the top and Forest 3 points off the promotion places.

As the Cup run continued, we warmed up for the Quarter-Final trip to Newcastle on Sat 9th March with a Sunday match on 3rd March where 29,657 saw a goaless Nottingham 'derby'.

By the time we returned to league action on the 16th March,  the F.A had already deemed the Quarer-Final would be replayed on Mon 18th March, incredibly at Goodison Park, Everton. We did well to maintain focus and Blackpool were beaten 2-0 in front of 15,724, both goals from the brilliant Duncan Mckenzie, a result that left Forest just 2 points off the promotion places with a game in hand.

The game on the 18th ended in a 0-0 draw & then in a move that almost defies belief, the incompetent F.A deemed the 2nd replay would also be at Goodison, so it was back there again on the Thursday 21st. Forest would be cheated again in that game by an idiot referee and we lost the game 1-0.

I have no doubt whatsoever that those 3 Cup ties took their toll on the team and derailed our promotion push as the side won just 3 of the last 10 after that defeat & losing 5, eventually finishing in 7th; 4 points off promotion. Duncan Mckenzie had had a briliant season scoring 26 league goals but unfortunately we would lose him in the summer, Brian Clough signing him for Leeds in his short stay there.

1974/5 started badly and without Mckenzie Forest were poor. Defeat at home to Notts County 0-2 on the 28th Dec left us in 13th and enough was enough for the fans. Allan Brown was sacked and Brian Clough appointed. Life by the River Trent would never be the same again. â€‹

Having beaten 1st Division Tottenham in Cloughie's 1st game in an FACup 3rd Round replay, a Barry Butlin goal secured a 1-0 win at Fulham in BC's 1st league game. However, he had no magic wand & we would not win again for 11 league matches,  1-0 at home to Sheff Weds.  Forest would end the season with a 2-1 win at home to West Brom finishing 16th.

1975/6 started well enough with a 2-0 win over Plymouth with more brawls on the terraces and pitch as fighting fans clashed all afternoon. We would only win 2 of the 1st 10 games, which left us in the relegation places. Form did pick up but after a 1-3 defeat at home to Chelsea, amidst huge crowd disorder again, on 17th Jan we were still only in 15th.

A sign of things to come with only 2 defeats in the last 16 and an 8th place finish with momentum did bode well for next season, especially when Peter Taylor was reunited with Brian Clough in that boiling summer of 1976.

We began the 76/77 campaign with much optimism, but we did not win until the 5th game, 4-3 at home to Hereford. A good point at Southampton was followed by a slightly bizarre set of results. In the next 3 home games, we scored 5, 6 & 5 winning all 3 but each were preceeded with a 1-0 away defeat. We then went 9 games without defeat and after a 3-1 win at Blackburn on NYD, Forest were 4th, ouside the promotion places on goal difference only. The Chelsea game on the 20th November, a 1-1 draw, saw some of the worst scenes of violence ever witnessed at the CG. It was pretty much out of control and a little scary.

A very significant game took place at the CG on 6th Aptril as Forest beat fellow promotion chasing Bolton 3-1 at the CG in front of 24,580 leaving the Reds 3rd in the final promotion spot. Bolton were 3 points behind but with 2 games in hand.

Next up, a 1-1 draw at Notts County in front of 32,518, a 2-1 defeat at high flying Chelsea & then the game where many thought we had blown promotion as we went down 0-1 at home to lowly Cardiff.

In their last 4 games, we did pretty much all we could with 3 wins and a draw, our last game being a 1-0 win at home to Millwall. In those days the matches did not finish concurrently and this is how the table looked after our last game:

                              P       Pts       GD

1) Wolves            41       55      +38

2) Chelsea           41       53     +16

3) FOREST           42       52      +34

---------------------------------------------------

4) Bolton             39       48     +21

5) Notts Co         41       48      +6

6) Blackpool       40       47      +14

Remember it was only 2 points for a win so Bolton essentially needed 5 points from their last 3 games given our vastly superior goal difference. They started with a win ... and then ... as the players travelled to Majorca .... Bolton 0-1 Wolves so Forest were up, given they would have needed to win their last game by a cricket score. For the record, they drew and we were promoted by the margin of 1 point.

I have attached below some clips from this period:

After 5 years away from the top flight we all wondered how well we might do in Division 1. Some tipped us for an immediate return. How wrong they would be proved as we enjoyed 3 years of unimaginable success & many good years after that.
